Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-oriented approach to the healing of trauma and other stress disorders. It was developed by Dr. Peter Levine, who observed that many people who had experienced trauma often experienced physical symptoms such as chronic pain, tension, and digestive issues.

The theory behind SE is that trauma is stored in the body and can be released through physical sensations and movements. During an SE session, the therapist works with the individual to help them become more aware of the physical sensations in their body and to release any tension or stress that may be stored there.

SE uses a variety of techniques to help individuals release tension and process trauma, including deep breathing, guided imagery, and physical movements. The therapist may also use touch to help the individual become more aware of their body and to help release any physical tension. By releasing tension and stress stored in the body, individuals can experience a greater sense of relaxation, calm, and overall well-being.

SE has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. It can be used as a standalone therapy or in conjunction with other forms of treatment.

Anna has been living and growing in Golden for 14 years now. Over the last three years, she has trained in Somatic Experiencing and is happy to announce that she is now a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. Her passion for the healing arts has expanded over the years, and she celebrates the profound effects Somatic Experiencing has had on herself, her family and the community.

Anna’s approach is rooted in compassion and gentle support. She has deep compassion for the human spirit that all of us carry, and the vulnerability that comes with the willingness to heal. She uses a gentle approach as she believes this is an important link to being able to integrate what has happened in a session, and provides an opportunity for us to integrate the changes into our lives. Culturally, people often want the quick fix, the fast results or to muscle through. While sometimes that happens or is helpful, she believes the value comes with the slowing down. Slowing down and making small changes can have the largest impact.

In addition to serving those with many forms of trauma, Anna has additional training applying Somatic Experiencing to Pre and Perinatal (PPN) trauma; that is from conception to birth, during labour and delivery, and after birth. There are many things that can happen in this phase of time, it is not to be overlooked. As it relates to PPN she works with birthing people, their partners, and the people that make up the ring of support around them.

Anna grew up in a modest household, studied science and entered the field of research before starting a family with her husband. When not working you can find her spending time with friends and enjoying the mountains with her husband. She has ventured down the many tributaries of life, and feels this has given her a rich diversity of experience that help her relate to the people she works with.

Anna is continually fascinated by the wisdom of the body, and how much we know without even having to think about it. Somatic Experiencing is a modality that honours this innate wisdom that we all carry.
